BREATHTAKING VIEWS

Queenstown and Wanaka, New Zealand

Nestled in central Otago on New Zealand's South Island, Queenstown is a dream destination for mountain bikers. This charming town features three lift-assisted bike parks, breathtaking alpine trails, and extensive trail networks. It's rare to find a location that offers so many outstanding mountain biking experiences in such a compact area, catering to riders of various skill levels and preferences. The mountain bike trails in Queenstown range from exhilarating flow tracks to steep, technical paths, alongside lengthy scenic routes and challenging ascents.

Make sure to check out the famous Rude Rock Trail at Coronet Peak. If you’re physically prepared and looking for a challenge, tackle the 50-kilometre Coronet Peak Loop, an exceptional alpine trail that was finished and opened in 2020.

Located an hour north of Queenstown, the picturesque mountain town of Wānaka lies beside Lake Wānaka, set against the backdrop of the Southern Alps. The biking community is rapidly expanding, primarily due to Bike Glendhu, an excellent pedal-powered mountain bike park just ten minutes from the town center. With 25 miles (40 kilometres) of singletrack created on land steeped in Māori cultural history and sustainable agriculture, Glendhu offers a unique mountain biking experience suitable for cyclists of all levels. Few locations on Earth are as breathtaking as Bike Glendhu. You’ll be amazed if you tackle the challenging Adze Up climb trail, which takes you to the top of the trail center. From there, the views over Glendhu Bay, looking back toward Wānaka, are stunning. And it’s all downhill from there back to the base, where you can grab a bite to eat and enjoy a cold drink.

CROSSING THE HIGHLANDS

Laugarvegur, Iceland

Imagine gliding along black volcanic rocks, glaciers, stunning waterfalls, and bubbling natural hot springs as you traverse between huts in a wild, remote setting. This is the Laugarvegur—a 35-mile (56-kilometre) thru-ride in Iceland’s breathtaking Southern Highlands—easily one of the most distinctive biking experiences worldwide.

Begin at the striking Landmannalaugar (The People’s Pools), a remarkable junction of trails and hot springs located about four hours from Reykjavik. Iceland’s most frequented hiking trail starts here and winds through a diverse landscape to Thórsmörk, a legendary valley near the southern coast.

Along the journey, take advantage of the excellent hut system, allowing you to spend several nights immersed in the Icelandic mountains while enjoying the trail at your own pace. The Laugarvegur reveals a stunning spectrum of Iceland’s unique geology—from vibrant moss and dark sand deserts to snow and steaming springs, blooming pink flowers in the harsh terrain, to turquoise lakes and lava fields. The Laugarvegur trail is genuinely extraordinary and exemplifies authentic adventure. Enjoy the natural hot springs and remember to pack a reliable raincoat; it will come in handy.

Situated on the sunny side of the Mont Blanc massif, the Aosta Valley has always been renowned for its food, wine, coffee, upscale ski resorts, and laid-back lifestyle. More recently, it has also gained recognition as one of the world's premier destinations for mountain biking. In particular, the high alpine trail riding is exceptional, offering endless opportunities.

We suggest basing your adventure in Aosta, the region’s capital and a historic Roman city. You can easily access countless trails from there through self-powered pedaling or van shuttles. The town features excellent restaurants, wine bars, shops, and Roman monuments to enjoy after your rides. Consider booking a few days with the local guide company, Aosta Valley Freeride, for a complete experience with local guides familiar with the hidden gems within the extensive trail network.

AT THE FOOT OF THE MATTERHORN

Zermatt, Switzerland

Nestled around the mountain village of Zermatt, a blend of long, winding singletrack and hand-built flow trails makes this iconic destination one of the most cherished biking spots in the Alps. When you add the spectacular scenery, impressive mountain infrastructure, and numerous huts, it’s no exaggeration to say that Zermatt is nearly the perfect place for mountain biking … with a strong dose of Euro-culture.

Car-free Zermatt is one of the oldest and most traditional villages in the Swiss Alps, with its heart in modern alpinism. Zermatt’s trajectory toward becoming one of the most well-known mountain destinations in the world started in 1865, after Edward Whymper, a young British climber and artist, summited the Matterhorn, one of the last peaks in the Alps to be reached in the modern era of mountaineering.

Following this, the allure of the “Mountain of Mountains” grew steadily. Zermatt became “the” place for British aristocrats to hike and climb, laying the foundation for today’s impeccable focus on meeting the needs of European visitors and beyond.

In modern times, it is one of the most popular ski resorts globally, and even when the snow melts, tourists never stop coming, thanks to the Matterhorn. Nowadays, they also visit for mountain biking, which is well worth it; few places in the Alps can offer such a good and diverse biking experience.

Located near the Colorado-Utah state border, mountain biking in the Grand Valley blends styles from both states — the rocky terrain of the Utah desert and the elevation of Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Expansive public land is available for 100 miles in every direction, featuring hundreds of epic trails with easy, winding climbs and high-speed, flowing descents from ridge to valley bottom.

Fruita has earned its reputation as the mountain biking mecca of western Colorado and is often one of the first places that comes to mind when discussing flowy singletracks. Mention trails like Kessel Run, Joe’s Ridge, Horsethief Bench, Zippity Do Dah, and mountain bikers worldwide will smile. If you enjoy distance, you can easily ride a mountain bike from Fruita to Moab, Crested Butte, Durango, and much farther without encountering a single inch of concrete. And while the legendary trails at 18 Road form the backbone of Fruita’s extensive trail network, the bike shop Over the Edge Sports serves as the heart and soul of the town’s incredibly dedicated bike community.

There is no cell service, plenty of wildlife, a few huts, and ever-changing weather. Therefore, we recommend you connect with Tyax Adventures — the only local experts and pioneers of float plane-assisted mountain biking in the Chilcotins. Tyax is based on the shore of Tyaughton Lake.

You can stay in their charming, rustic lodge, start pedaling from the door, or opt for a short, exciting, and highly efficient float plane drop. From the drop-off point, you can ride for days before returning to civilization – an experience for a lifetime — but make sure you’re well prepared.

SCANDINAVIA'S MOAB

Reinnesfjellet, Norway

Reinnesfjellet, situated at the 68th parallel and approximately 125 miles north of the Arctic Circle, lies at the end of a narrow Norwegian fjord, making it one of the world’s most surprising biking destinations. The breathtaking landscape is a result of the ice ages, where ancient mountain ranges were eroded down to sea level, later uplifted by tectonic forces. Over the centuries, persistent winds and flowing water have shaped an astonishing natural bike park within this remarkable setting.

Situated about an hour south of Narvik, a small town in northern Norway, Reinnesfjellet features a 28-mile polished granite rock ridge characterized by rolling terrain that spans more than a mile in width, providing endless options.

This unique natural wonder is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks, fjords, and small glaciers, offering stunning views in every direction. Locals refer to it as “Scandinavia’s Moab,” and this comparison fits perfectly. Riding a bike here is truly remarkable, and unless you visit on a busy summer day, you can almost guarantee that you’ll have the place to yourself.
